STORY OUTLINE
George Smith, from Macknade (near Ingham) family, enlisted at Cairns in October 1916 at age 27.
His address, when enlisted, was within Douglas Shire.
He embarked from Sydney in January 1917, disembarked in England in April and was off to war in France in September 1917, Although initially placed in the 2nd Light Horse, he was soon shifted to 52nd Battalion and for most of his war effort, the 16th Battalion.
He was hospitalised back to England in November, then returned to France in February 1918.
After the war he departed England for Australia in the Port Napier 12-05-19 and was discharged on 13 August 1919.
