STORY OUTLINE
Corporal Fredrick Smith was born in Newcastle NSW. He was employed and lived in Mossman, Qld.
He enlisted in Cairns. He was recorded as being a widower with a child, daughter Miss Ivy May Smith, of Mossman, as next of kin. There was an enquiry from a woman saying she had been deserted three years ago by her husband and wanted information on Frederick Smith who enlisted in Cairns, no further letters. Corporal F Smith served 15 months in the field then was reported missing in Action 5/04/18.
He was then reported wounded and a P.O.W. in German hands.
He escaped from the prison camp and returned to Allied lines just as the war ended.
He was repatriated to England 25/11/18 and returned to Australia 5/03/19, discharged 29/06/19.
Fred Smith married Mabel Lematy at Mossman, then moved to a property at Hughenden and subsequently to Brunswick Heads, NSW.
