STORY OUTLINE

James Sanford (aka Sandford) enlisted at Cairns in February 1916 and embarked 4/5/1916 Brisbane on HMAT "Seang Choon" A49 and marched in to 3rd Training Battalion Egypt thence to Perham Downs Camp, Salisbury England.

On 16/10/1916 he arrived at Etaples France and joined the 9th Battalion the following January.

On 31/10/1917 he was awarded the Military Medal for bravery at Polygon Wood, Ypres in Belgium (see "Northern Herald" 21/11/1918).

He received a wound to the thigh for which he was sent back to hospital in England in December 1917.

Returning to France and after only eight weeks in the field, a tumour to his thigh wound forced him back to England. Discharged on 1st April 1918 he embarked 21/04/18 HMAT 'Suevic' A29 from England and arrived 7/06/1918 and on 24 September 1918 died at the 6th Australian General Hospital, Kangaroo Point and was buried in Toowong Cemetery, Brisbane, QLD.

James Sanford's name is located at panel 57 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial.
