STORY OUTLINE
Hugh Rose, born in Port Douglas on 28/08/1889, enlisted in Brisbane on 26/10/1916.
On 1/08/1917 he was taken on strength with 31st Battalion, and detached to the 8th Light Trench Mortar Battery on 20/09/1917.
He was reported missing in action on 26/09/1917 during the Battle of Passchendaele.
German Prisoner of War documents give his place of capture variously as Polygon Wood, Menin, and Ypres.
He was in a German hospital with wounds to the head (left eye) and shoulder, then a POW in Limburg.
He was repatriated to England on 11/01/1919 and discharged in Australia on 29/06/1919.
