STORY OUTLINE
Peter Christian Kristensen enlisted at Cairns and embarked from Sydney for overseas on HMAT 'Demosthenes' and disembarked at Plymouth England.
He was sent to France in June 1916 (most likely to relieve the 25th Battalion after the AIF's disastrous loss of some 10,000 men in the April/May offences at Bullecourt in northern France).
Some sixteen weeks later he was wounded in action, probably during the Battle of Broodseinde Ridge, Ypres, Belgium.
The final result of his injuries necessitated transfer on the hospital ship Dunluce Castle to the Beaufort War Hospital in Bristol, England where his right leg was amputated above the knee.
He was subsequently returned to Australia on the hospital ship Karoola to Melbourne, finally being discharged in August 1918.
