STORY OUTLINE

John Kostin was born in Russia of Greek Orthodox religion and was a fitter who had fought in the Russo-Japanese war before coming to Australia in 1910.

He possibly worked at the Mossman Mill when he applied to enlist in Port Douglas on 11th Dec 1915.

He sailed to UK via Egypt and married his wife Dora in UK in December 1916.

He was sent to France as a Sapper in Jan 1917.

He was wounded twice, firstly with a gunshot wound to the face in May 1917 and then he was gassed in June 1918 in France.

In February 1919 he was transferred for non-military employment to manufacture machinery in Glasgow for three months.

It was not necessary for Russians to be naturalised to enlist and he finally took the step in 1928.

John died 2-08-37 in Brisbane of mustard gas.
