STORY OUTLINE
James Johnston was born in Aberdeen, Scotland but was a labourer in Douglas Shire when he enlisted in January 1915 at age 23,
He served with the 3rd Field Artillery both at Gallipoli and the Western Front. He arrived at Gallipoli on 21 July 1915 and left on the 'Caledonia' in the major retreat of 26 December 1915.
He was hospitalised for nearly a month in February 1916 and then in September, in France, he suffered gunshot wounds and was transferred to the First Australian Hospital in England.
After his discharge on 21 February 1917, he returned to his birthplace, Aberdeen.
