STORY OUTLINE

We can link Thomas Evans to Douglas Shire only through his address given at enlistment - via his sister Miss Edith Evans, Mossman. Thomas Alexander Evans was born in Bundaberg and enlisted at Townsville, a stockman. He embarked on the Arcanius in May 1917 and served in France with the 14th Machine Gun Company. He spent some time in hospital in 1918 through dysentery and other ailments and was also committed to some punishment for misdemeanours. Perhaps this is the reason for his retention for extra duty with the graves unit through 1919. He returned to Australia in September 1919 and was discharged in February 1920.
