STORY OUTLINE
Augustus Hodgkinson Davies embarked at Sydney on HMAT Hororata A20 on 14/06/1917 and a week before he was due to disembark on 26/08/1917 at Liverpool England he was admitted to the ship's hospital with mumps. Transferred to the 11th Training Battalion at Larkhill near Salisbury England, then to Fovent Camp west of Salisbury and on to the Command Depot at Weymouth further west on Christmas Eve 1917.
He was returned for discharge to Australia on hospital transport ship S.S. Balmoral Castle on 1/02/1918 arriving at Sydney on 28/02/1918 before travelling to Brisbane where he was discharged on 27/05/1918 on medical grounds of chronic rheumatism and flat feet. Augustus or 'Gus' as he was known enlisted for WW2 at 54 years of age on 10/06/1940 (Q187467) and served with the No.1 Garrison Battalion until 11/10/1944 when he was medically discharged.
