STORY OUTLINE

George Chimes was an 18 year old porter when he enlisted in Cairns on 12-01-1915. He joined the 15th Battalion in the Gallipoli Peninsula on 13th July and was killed in action on 8th August 1915. (He was listed as 'wounded and missing' until a court of enquiry in April 1916 found him killed in action). Sergeant Chimes appears on the Douglas Shire Honour Board, though we have not established his linkage to the district.
