STORY OUTLINE
Eric Carlson was an 18 year old brass moulder, born in Hawthorn, Victoria, who enlisted in Melbourne on 31-07- 1918. He was sent to a depot but was discharged prior to leaving Australia in consequence of the demobilisation of the AIF on 12-12-1918. Although he is the only E W Carlson we have traced, his link to Douglas Shire has not been identified. Is this man the E W Carlson on the Shire Honour Board? An E Carlson (not EW) who did live in the north was Edward Carlson, a 40 year old Finnish labourer who worked in the cane industry in the north (including Proserpine Mill, but perhaps also Mossman?). He enlisted at Townsville in August 1916, 47th Battalion (No Q10546), but was discharged in October 1916 because of muscular damage (apparently caused by heavy lifting at the mill).
