STORY OUTLINE
John Thomas Byrnes was born in Clermont, Qld. He was a labourer, aged 28, when he enlisted at Port Douglas on 31 -01-15 citing Mrs M. O'Brien, Ravenswood, as his next of kin. As private 1912, he left from Brisbane on 16-04-15 and joined the 5/15 Battalion at Gallipoli on 18th July 15. As his arm and leg were injured in battle on 12-08-15 he was taken to hospitals in the Cairo area until he was ready for light duties at Zeitoun on 8-09-15. By January 1916, he was sick with lung disease but rejoined his Battalion on 23-03-16 at Tel-el-Kebir. On 20-05-16 he was hospitalised at Abbassia and diagnosed with Phthisis (TB) with the result he was returned to Australia for discharge in Brisbane on 5-09-16 and awarded a disability pension next day.
