STORY OUTLINE
Michael Edward Byrne was born in Beaudesert but appears to have lived in Sydney by wartime (wife's address). If so, we might envision that Michael, a labourer aged 43, came north in the cane cutting season, hence enlisting at Townsville. We might also surmise, if he is the M E Byrne on the Honour Board, that he regularly worked in the Douglas district. He was assigned to the 1st Mining Corps as Sapper, embarking from Australia in February 1916. In England, he was hospitalised for some time with bronchitis, then returned to France, where he was seriously wounded in August 1918. He returned to Australia on the Derbyshire, departing England 2-03-1919 and was discharged 9th June 1919. We do not have strong evidence that this is the correct M E Byrne - if you know an alternative please contact us.
