STORY OUTLINE
Thomas Joseph Carmody was Shire Clerk in Douglas at the time of his enlistment in August 1916. After embarking from Sydney on the Demosthenes in December 1916, Corporal Carmody fought on the Western Front with the 26th Battalion. He was wounded in action on 8 August 1918, a matter of great concern to his father as his brother John Joseph Carmody was killed in action in June 1917. He returned to Australia and was discharged 17 October 1919. On 23 December 1919, Cairns Post reported that: "Mr T J Carmody, after over four years absence spent in Europe at the late war, is back again at Port Douglas and has taken over his old position as tramway manager and clerk for the Port Douglas-Mossman Shire Council. During his long absence at the front, Mr E G Blackburn acted as his locum tenens.
