STORY OUTLINE

Born in Port Douglas, Herbert Booker's initial war effort was on garrison duty at Thursday Island in August 1914. He joined the troopship 'Kanowna' bound for Rabaul to capture German New Guinea. However, after troubles aboard ship, the troops returned to Townsville without participating in the capture of German New Guinea. He was discharged in September 1914 but then re-enlisted at Cairns in February 1915, at age 21. He embarked from Brisbane on 16 April 1915, joined the 15th Battalion in Gallipoli on 13th July but was killed in action within a month - he died 8th August 1915. He is commemorated at Lone Pine Memorial 44.
