STORY OUTLINE
Maurice Bonthorne, born in Wellington NZ, enlisted in Townsville but given address was Mossman. We know little of his connection to Mossman - he appears to have worked as a labourer in the District - for how long and whether he returned some years after the war, we are not sure. However, we do know that he married Annie Holland in Northwich, Chester and worked in a garage in Warrington, Lancashire for some time (his father lived in Warrington). His war record shows that he enlisted in January 1916, was assigned to the 26th Battalion and later the 9th Battalion, that he fought on the Western Front and he was hospitalised more than once. He was discharged in February 1920.
