STORY OUTLINE

John Allen, a 24 –year-old blacksmith, embarked from Brisbane aboard HMAT Ascankus on 25 May 1915.

He was hospitalised quite a few times. In Malta it was for jaundice, in London it was slipped semilunar cartilage, then in Boulogne it was displaced cartilage. On 15 February 1916 he was awarded the Serbian Gold Medal for distinguished services rendered during the M.E.F Campaign by the King of Serbia.

He was also awarded the ANZAC Commemorative 14/15 Star.

On 24 October 1916 he embarked on HS St Andrew at Boulogne for England. On 10 September 1917 he embarked aboard HS A38 from England for return to Australia. He was discharged.
