STORY OUTLINE

George Allen was born in Port Douglas, became a carpenter, perhaps living at Ravenshoe and enlisted at Herberton in February 1915. Assigned to the 5th Light Horse, he embarked for Gallipoli on the Shropshire and entered the Gallipoli campaign in November 1915. Part of the withdrawal from Gallipoli on 25 December 1915, he disembarked at Alexandria and was then based at Serapeum ex Maadi. In July 1917, he was transferred to a Railway Construction unit. He was later hospitalised in November 1918, then in rest camp until departure for Australia on the HT Madras. We know little of his movements after discharge in October 1919 other than a letter from him in 1967 requesting his Gallipoli Medallion, mailed from Mt Perseverance Julatten. It appears that he returned to live in the Douglas locality.
