STORY OUTLINE
Cane farmer Samuel required extensive dental treatment on enlistment.
Two months after arrival in Belgium, he was hospitalised with frostbite or trench feet for four months.
Two months after returning to his unit in France, he suffered a shotgun wound to the chest in July 1918, but he rejoined unit in September and was wounded again on 3 October by a shotgun wound that fractured his leg.
His right leg was amputated through the knee 5-10-18 in France, then amputated through femur 28-10-18.
He was discharged and returned to Australia on 19 April 1919 and waited a year for an artificial limb
