STORY OUTLINE
Archibald William Hamilton Slater embarked at Sydney on 18/05/1916 on HMAT "Demosthene" A64 and disembarked at Plymouth on 20/06/1916, then proceeded to France on 24/11/1916. He was transferred to the 3rd Division Salvage Company on 4/02/1917 and appointed to the rank of Corporal six months later. In April of 1918 he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal whilst attempting to defuse the bombs of an aeroplane close to the road near Buire whilst under fire during the Battle of Durancourt.
After brief leave to the UK and Paris, he rejoined his unit but fell ill with fever and was hospitalised in France during November and again in December 1918 with chronic bronchitis.
He was discharged back to duty in January 1919, and marched out to Sutton Veny Camp in Wiltshire England, followed by another period in hospital.
He was invalided to return to Australia on the SS "Dongola", arriving Melbourne 17/05/1919.
