STORY OUTLINE
Although listed on the Douglas Shire Honour Board, we have not been able to find a WWI soldier G Scott associated with Douglas Shire. The two most likely of all the G Scott's in the National records were both station hands at time of enlistment. Both enlisted in south Queensland - it is feasible that they worked in the north and returned south to farewell family before enlisting. Geoffrey Martin Scott, No 2976, family at Taroom, enlisted in Roma, aged 19, and fought in France with the 52nd Battalion. He was seriously wounded in June 1917, rejoined the unit in December 1917, and saw out the rest of the war except for a non-lethal bout of pneumonia in the last couple of months,
He embarked England for Australia in January 1919.
We don't know where he went after the war, just that he died 14th June 1987.
Gordon Scott, No 3723, born in Rockhampton, with Next of Kin a brother on a property near Kingaroy, enlisted in Brisbane in December 1914, aged 20.
He became a Driver with the 1st (and later 4th) Division Ammunition Column in the 3rd Field Artillery Brigade, firstly in the Middle East and then France.
In December 1916, he suffered a serious back injury in a collision, was hospitalised and then returned to Australia for spinal surgery in August 1917.
Gordon married while overseas. A claim for a commemorative medal by wife Dorothy in 1967 indicates that he was dead by then. and had most likely settled at The Summit near Stanthorpe (her address in 1967).
