STORY OUTLINE
William Peterson was a farm hand from Cairns, but had a Port Douglas address at the time of enlisting, at age 18, in February 1916.
Placed with the 3rd Pioneer Battalion, he served on the Western Front, although service was interrupted by hospitalisation and wounding.
Making it through to the end of the war, he returned to Australia in March 1919 and was discharged on 15 June 1919.
