STORY OUTLINE
Joseph Perry was a single man when he enlisted at age 37 years. Since he gives his next-of-kin as "friend" Miss May Murphy of the North Australian Hotel (later renamed the "Central")- it could well be that they were sweethearts.
He embarked in August 1916 on the HMAT "Itonus" disembarking at Plymouth on 18th October 1916 - just two months later the "Itonus" was torpedoed and sunk in the Mediterranian Sea.
After three months training he was transferred to Parkhouse Hospital in England suffering from mumps.
Joseph was sent to Etaples, France in April 1917 and was killed in action less than three weeks later.
He is commemorated on Panel No.57 at the Australian National Memorial in Villers-Bretonneaux where the names of 10,885 Australians who were killed in France, and who have no known grave are marked.
