STORY OUTLINE
William Joseph Gregg had first applied to enlist in September 1915 at age 19 years and two months and was put on reserve. After a September 1916 medical assessment in Mossman QLD he was finally accepted in 7-10-1916, listing his age as 21 and embarked from Brisbane per HMAT Marathon A74 on 27-10-1916 and disembarked at Plymouth England on 9-1-1917.
He transferred to the 13th Training Battalion at Codford, England on the Salisbury Plain west of London. William always seemed frustrated under military discipline and was regularly absent from parade and consequently fined.
At the same time he was in and out of hospital, a situation which continued to exist through to mid-1917. On 4-7-1917 he was transferred to the Monte Video Camp, Dorset further west on the coast of the English Channel. He was then returned to Australia, suffering a hernia, embarking England 27-7-1917 per HMAT Demosthenes A64. His discharge papers show he was discharged as 'medically unfit not due to misconduct'.
