STORY OUTLINE
1916, aged 23. He embarked Brisbane in October 1916 with the 52nd Battalion bound for France. Private Gaffney avoided serious illness or injury through to war's end. For several months at the end of the war he was appointed Driver with the 14th Australian Army Service Corps. He returned to Australia in July 1919 and was discharged in September. A 1934 letter requesting replacement of discharge certificate indicates that he settled in Wondai after the war.
