STORY OUTLINE
George Edward Crawford was born in Sale Victoria but enlisted in Perth, October 1915, at age 37. His eldest brother, Thomas Crawford (later Senator) managed Brie Brie cane plantation (Mossman) and another brother, Robert, farmed at Cassowary. We do not know whether George spent time in Douglas Shire with his brothers, or for how long. This appears to be his main link to the district. After training, his first assignment was to Tel-el-Kebir, Middle East, from 1 July 1916, then as a sapper with the 17th Field Company of Army Engineers to France, with Rouelles as base. Sapper Crawford was killed in action in France on 4 May 1918.
