STORY OUTLINE
Charles Muntz Crawford was a son of T W (Thomas) Crawford and Emily Crawford of Brie Brie, Mossman. He enlisted in May 1917 aged 23 and was assigned to the 41st Battalion, facing the fierce fighting on the Western Front. Front-line action was relatively short for Charles. In France from January 1918, he was wounded and hospitalised from May to September. He then returned to the front line from September until the war ended on 11 November 1918. During this time, the 41st Battalion was involved in the defence of Amiens in the German Great Offensive in March and, towards the end of the war, participated in the operation that broke the defences of the Hindenburg line along the St Quentin Canal. After the war, Charles returned to the farm but did not marry or engage much in community activity. These days he would most likely be recognised as suffering Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Charles died in 1966 aged 73.
