STORY OUTLINE
Leslie Lyall Christie embarked on 3-01-1916 at Brisbane on board HMAT Kyarra A55 to Egypt where he embarked on HT Oriana at Alexandria Egypt for arrival at Marseilles on 27-03-1916. He was taken on strength with the 26th Battalion in France on 9-06-1916. Wounded by a bullet passing through his right hand seven weeks later at Pozieres France, he was treated in the No.6 Hospital British Red Cross at Etaples which was staffed by volunteers from Liverpool England and transferred to the East Leeds War Hospital in England on 3-08-1916 and then to the No.3 Australian Auxiliary Hospital at Dartford England for treatment and discharge as a convalescent. On the 8-04-1917 he was returned from Plymouth England to Australia on HMAT Barambah A37 arriving 9-06-1917. The Cairns Post of Tuesday 19 June 1917 reported his arrival back to Australian soil but said 'His right hand is so far improved that he is able to write as well as ever, but it is doubtful he will be able to efficiently handle a gun again.'
