STORY OUTLINE

On hearing that his brother and farming partner Louis was killed in action, Andrew Arntzen enlisted at age 37 to avenge the death.

Just prior to departure for the war front, he applied for 17 days leave to wind up affairs as a cane grower. He departed Sydney on the Orontes in December 1916. For some time he was assigned as a Driver in the 3rd Field Artillery Brigade, with much time spent in England. He was later assigned to the role of Gunner in the Small Arms Ammunition Section, 1st Divisional Ammunitions Column in France. He stayed on for some time after the Armistice and was finally discharged in October 1919.
