STORY OUTLINE
Kevin O'Reilly was born at Port Douglas and enlisted at Cairns. He was one of the first Australian volunteers of WW1. He joined up on 14/08/1914 and was on the troopship "Kanowna" sailing for German New Guinea when the ship returned to Townsville. "on account of the trouble caused by firemen on troopships".
He did not participate in the capture of German New Guinea and was discharged on 18/09/1914.
On 8/01/1916 he re-enlisted in Townsville, and was sent to France, joining the 25th Battalion on 26/01/1917.
He was wounded twice; severe gunshot wounds to the chest and foot (treated in England), and a shell wound to the head.
