STORY OUTLINE
Frederick McLean was born in Port Douglas and enlisted in Cairns in February 1916.
It was February 1917 before he saw action in France with the 9th Battalion. He was wounded in action in May 1917 and hospitalised in England. He was awarded the Military Medal on 2 July for 'Initiative in taking bomb-carrying parties and keeping posts supplied.
Splendid courage and devotion to duty under heavy fire' (14-05-17). He was repatriated to Australia in September 1917.
Pte McLean was discharged on 29 January 1918.
