STORY OUTLINE
Alexander Robert McGregor managed a farm at Cassowary Creek, Mossman before enlisting in January 1916.
He embarked on SS Hawkes Bay from Sydney on 20/04/16 to Alexandria Egypt and on to Plymouth England.
He joined the 12th Australian Machine Gun Company in Etaples France on 30/08/1916. In January 1917 he was promoted to Lance Corporal and then in the following June he was promoted to Corporal. He was recommended for the award of Military Medal on 06/07/1917 and shortly afterward admitted to hospital, later to rejoin his unit in October after being wounded, probably at Ypres. In January 1918 he was sent to the home base of the Belmont Park Machine Gun Training Depot near Grantham, and after nearly nine months, presumably as a machine gun instructor, he rejoined his unit back in France in October 1918. Hospitalised again in March 1919 and transferred back to England he was repatriated to Australia on hospital ship 'Swakopmund' and disembarked Sydney on 02/08/1919.
Bob McGregor resumed farming at Cassowary Creek, then in 1934 bought a cane farm near Edmonton south of Cairns.
He died at Gordonvale in 1978.
