STORY OUTLINE
Born in Thornborough (interestingly, a centre for the Hodgkinson goldfields), Arthur Herbert Hodgkinson had moved to Douglas Shire as a labourer when he enlisted at Port Douglas in January 1915.
With the 15th Battalion, he was thrust into fierce battle in Gallipoli on 2nd August. He was listed as 'wounded on 7th or 8th August' then wounded and missing - it was not until the Court of Enquiry in April 1916 that he was announced killed in action. However, his father, also Arthur Hodkinson, had received advice in early September 1915 that he was wounded, wrote requesting an address, was given an address for his wounded son, and so the anxious father no doubt wrote to a son believed wounded but already dead.
