STORY OUTLINE
George Hammond, born in Port Douglas, was in Townsville, married and working as a labourer, when he enlisted April 2016, aged 23.
Assigned to the 47th Battalion, he left Australia in September 1916 and arrived at the Front Line in February 1917. Private Hammond was hospitalised briefly in May 1917 then on 7 June 1917 he was killed in action in Belgium. Unfortunately, advice did not reach his wife before she read about it in the local paper. His gravesite is just outside Messines.
