STORY OUTLINE

Hugh Cobon, born in Cooktown, enlisted at Port Douglas in March 1915. On the 24/05/1915 he embarked per H.M.A.T A11 'Ascanius' and proceeded to Gallipoli Peninsula on the 04/09/1915. He disembarked on 09/01/1916 at Alexandria but on 26/01/1916 went to Hospital in Tel-el-Kabir with bronchitis, then sciatica. He was returned to Australia for discharge per 'Tonus' on 10/06/1916. Sergeant Cobon later lost all his personal effects which included his medals when he had to leave Singapore and believed they were then in the hands of the Japanese.
