When he enlisted at Mossman in November 1914 he was assigned to the 5th Light Horse and moved up to the rank of Farrier Sergeant. Although he suffered some illness, he survived the war in Gallipoli (from 15 May 1915) and the Middle East, returning to Australia in November 1918.
