Douglas Shire WWI Diggers

Discover the heroic legacy of Douglas Shire's WWI soldiers through our comprehensive historical records.

Young men of Douglas Shire responded well to the call to serve their country during World War I, 1914-1918.

We have identified just over 220 men who were born or enlisted in the Douglas Shire or who enlisted elsewhere but had family addresses back in the Douglas Shire.

Our website offers:

  • Summaries of their service records and short stories telling what we know of them from records or newspaper articles or contact with relatives

  • Information on the Douglas Shire soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice

  • Local historical photographs and documents from the Douglas Shire

  • Links to national resources such as the Australian War Memorial and National Archives

  • Stories of individual soldiers
